Motor Racing Brabham Wins British Grand Prix At Aintree

AINTREE (Liverpool), July 18. The Australian, Jack Brabham, driving a Cooper Climax, today won the British Grand Prix at Aintree. Driving a penectly-judged race, I Brabham beat Stirling Moss, of Britain, driving a 8.R.M.. with the New Zealander, Bruce McLaren, also driving a Cooper Climax, third. Brabham now has 27 points in the world driving championship, and has established a commanding lead, being well ahead of his nearest rival. Tony Brooks, of Britain, who has 14 points. Brabham went into a commanding lead at Uie start oi lhe 75-lap Grand Prix. He was followed by HarrySchell (8.R.M.) and Joakim Bonnier, the Swedish driver, in another B.R.M. Moss, who started from the third row of the grid, was sixth after the first lap. but began to pile on the pressure, overtaking the cars in front. After 20 laps Brabham was 16 seconds ahead of Moss, with Trintignant third, followed by Schell, McLaren and Bonnier. Moss and Brabham were lapping at the same speed, about 90.6 miles an hour. Tony Brooks retired in the thirteenth lap when his Vanwall developed engine trouble. On the twenty-sixth lap Moss broke his own record with a time of Imin 58.6 sec (91.06 miles an hour), but three laps later Brabham knocked two-fifths of a second off the time, to set up a new record of 91.22 miles an hour. Broken Again Moss broke the lap record again on . the thirty-eighth lap with a time of Imin 58.2 sec (91.37 miles an hour). On the next lap he lowered the time by a fifth of a second, to make a new record speed of 91.53 miles an hour. Moss again raised the record on the forty-fifth lap, with a time of Imin 56.8 sec (91.68 miles an hour), and he reduced the gap between himself and Brabham to just more than eight seconds. As he passed the pits on the forty-eighth lap he signalled towards his rear wheels. On the fiftieth lap he stopped for a 31second change of the rear wheels and resumed the race, still in second place, but with a gap of 52sec between himself and Brabham. On the sixty-sixth lap Moss made a pit stop to refuel and lost second position to McLaren. But within ♦wo laps he was back in second place. In the sixty-ninth lap he once more increased the record with a lap in Imin 57sec (92.31 miles an hour). thirteenth lap of the sports car race when it caugnt tire, he was unhurt. Moss made a bad start from the front row of the grid in the sports car race, and his car was bumped by a Lotus Climax driven by tha Hon. Edward Grenal:. The rear of Moss s car was badly dented and he went into the pus aiter the first lap to have bodywork pulled off his rear wheels. He rejoined the race last of hhe 21 starters, but with brilliant driving began to make his way through the field. By the twelfth lap he was ninth, and in doing so smashed the sports ear record. But on the thirteenth lap his car caught fire at Anchor Crossing and he had to jump out of it. Moss retired from the race. . „ The race was won by Graham Hill (Lotus Climaxl. after a battle with the Australian Jack Brabham (Cooper Climax). The race, in two classes, was over 17 laps (51 mlleai of the three-mile circuit. Second in the overall race was Alan Stacey (Lotus Climax), with Brabham third. Brabham set up a new class record for the two litre clasa of 87.10 miles an hour.
