ITALIAN SHIP AT ALBANY
Police Present In Force (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PERTH. July 16. The entire police force turned out at tiny Albany, 250 miles south of Perth, when the Italian freighter Giove berthed today. The Giove was the first Italian freighter to berth in Australia since the Italian seamen’s strike began. Dockers decided not to work the ship and shouted abuse at two men who volunteered to handle the mooring lines. One man decided not to hahdle the lines after all, and Italian seamen secured the aft line after the remaining volunteer had fixed the foreward line. Apart from shouting abuse, the dockers were orderly. The Giove is due at Albany for a week loading 9000 tons of barley. It is not known whether the Italian seamen are likely to join the strike. The strike is in its thirty-ninth day Yesterday the Italian Prime Minister (Mr Antonio Segni) received the chairman of the Private Shipowners’ Federation (Dr. Angelo Costa), says a Rome message.
Mr Segni said on Saturday that he would try to settle the strike (this week.
