"Code Of Ethics" For Rugby In Otago

r FHE action of the management A committee of the Otago Rugby Union in adopting a code of ethics for play up to and including third grade, is creating considerable interest in other parts of the Dominion. The committee has adopted six proposals in this code of ethics, and indications are that this code is proving an undoubted success in junior Rugby in Dunedin. The proposals are: (1) Any forward not part of the scrum should not be more than an arm’s length away from the body of the scrum. (2) A similar restriction applies to the first and last forwards in any line-out.

(3) Backs on defence do not advance past a line drawn through the base of their own scrum until the ball is out of the scrum. (4) No forward should enter any scrum from the opponent’s side, even if he is behind the ball.

(5) A forward who is not part of the scrum must retire behind the ball when it is being heeled through his own scrum. (6) No player who has been left behind in the play should

tackle an opponent from behind if the opponents have secured the ball from an ensuing loose scrum. The points covered are aimed at restricting the activities of the loose forward. They attempt to teach backs to run with the ball so tfcat, when they reach senior grade Rugby and meet the roving number 8. they can counter him. Benefits

Other benefits which may accrue from the adoption of this code of ethics are that the players themselves may forego their attitude that breaking the rules is wrong if the player is caught, and that the players may succeed in finding brighter Rugby possible under the existing framework of the laws of the game. If the adoption of this code of ethics brings forth a change in the attitude of players and coaches to the game, then the experiments of the Otago Rugby Union will be well worth while. Canterbury’s match against Wellington last season showed that the present rules are not restrictive. It is the players who are to blame.
