RESEARCH IN N.Z.

Fields In Many Industries i (Neio Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, June 23. ! Although New Zealand spends j about £3 million annually on scientific work, the secretary of' the D.S.I.R. (Dr. W. M. Hamilton) i considers there are many fields j where more research could proi fitably be done.

In New Zealand the amount spent on research each year is just over £1 per head of population. Britain and the United Slates spend about £4 per head. Dr. Hamilton said in Gisborne today that New Zealand spent about £2O million annually on reading. “Yet it does virtually no research at all into loading problems. e

“Some ‘trouble shooting’ is done for the Ministry of Works when it encounters difficulties, but there is no long range research. “There is practically no research on building problems. Some work on timber strengths and preservatives has been done, and some other work, but it is very small in relation to the value of the industry. "Virtually no research is done in the fishing industry. “The dairy industry spends about one-tenth of 1 per cent, of the value of our dairy produce on research. Much more could be done, leading probably to greater variety and higher quality.”
