DAVIS CUP TO BRITAIN

Prediction By Hoad FOREST HILLS (New York), June 23. The Australian professional tennis star, Lew Hoad, said today that he thought this year's Davis Cup might be won by Britain. “Don’t be surprised if the Davis Cup goes back to Europe this year in the hands of the young British team,” Hoad said in an interview with the American Associated Press. Hoad, who was in Australia’s Davis Cup team for four years before turning professional in 1957, said: “I don't know when there has been such a wide open fight. It looks like the country with the best balanced team will win it, and my vote goes to the British.” “Nobody is a cinch bet for the cup.” Hoad said. “Even India, with young Ramanathan Krishnan, has a chance.” “I think the British will beat Spain because the Spaniards have only one good player, Andres Gimeno," Hoad said. “Then I think they’ll take the Italians in the European finals because the matches will be played on grass in England. “After that, the British will play the American Zone winner, which let us say will be the Australians. Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson both have been beaten too often this year to give Australia much hope.”
