LAWN TENNIS Two N.Z. Players Still In Wimbledon Singles

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 24. Wimbledon spectators went away disappointed from court two yesterday after the first appearance at this year’s lawn tennis championships of the women’s singles favourite, 18-year-old Miss Christine Truman, of Britain.

Many more people than the. court surrounds would comfort-1 ably hold packed the seating and! standing room as Miss Truman came out for what should have been a formal second round win over Miss Susan Waters, a bespectacled British school teacher. But Miss Waters played above herself and Miss Truman far below—so that the number one seed had quite a fight before she struggled through 6-3, 7-s—after being within two points of losing the second set. But Miss Truman was not the only one of the favourites to find the going hard. Mrs Beverley Fleitz (United States), seeded third, had some anxious moments before disposing of Miss Renee Schuurman (South Africa), 2-6. 6-4, 6-4. The closest call of the seeded women, however, was endured by Miss Sally Moore (United States). She had to save two match points in the second set before she beat Miss Fay Muller (Australia), 5-7, 8-6, 6-4. Miss Truman’s anti-climatic performance was in contrast to the ruthless efficiency shown by the second seed, Miss Angela Mortimer (Britain) in defeating Spain's Miss Maria Weis, 6-0, 6-0. In the men’s doubles, which also began today, the Swedish holders of the title, Sven Davidson and Ulf Schmidt, playing with other Swedish partners this year, were both eliminated in the first round. Schmidt and Jan Erik Lundquist were beaten in five sets by the Australian Bob Howe and Britain’s Roger Becker. Davidson and Staff Stockenberg were beaten in straight sets by the French pair, Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Claude Molinari. It was a brighter day for New Zealand. Lew Gerrard, who was in danger of defeat when his match with the Australian Neville Nette was stopped because of failing light on Monday night at one set each and 4-6 in the third, finished off the match in four sets. The score was 9-11, 6-3, 10-8, 6-4. Miss Ruia Morrison was too steady for Mrs R. C. Panton (Britain) and won 6-3, 7-5. Gerrard- and Miss Morrison are the only New Zealanders left in the singles. Gerrard will meet G. Mulloy (United States), a former Wimbledon doubles champion in the second round. Miss Morrison will next play Miss J. D. Johnson CUnited States). Miss P. M. Nettleton was beaten by 17-year-old Miss L. Gerson (South Africa), 3-6, 8-6, 6-4. At one stage the New Zealander was leading 5-3 in the second set and 30-love, requiring only two points for set and match.

For a start the New Zealander was much the steadier and more accurate and it looked as though she had the game in her pocket when the second set was going her way.

It was then that the young South African showed a flash of fighting spirit. Although 3-5 and love-30 down, she took the second set by 8 games to 6 and again, although 2-4 down in the final set, went for all her shots and bombarded the New Zealander off the court and out of the singles. The match lasted more than 80 minutes and both girls seemed just about exhausted when they finished. Results of today’s matches were: WOMEN’S SINGLES Miss A.
