TIMARU. June 23. The stablemates. Lightning Boy and Graewyn. rival candidates for the Donald Grant Memorial on Saturday, and the promising Underbid were impressive workers at Washdyke today. A hard Host last night on top of heavy rain on Sunday night left the plough solidly frozen. All the gallops took place on the course proper, where the trestles were out nearly 30 feet and the going was slippery. Proceedings got under way very late in the morning. The first Io work were Brian Warwick <C. S. Jones). Race Book 18. T. Jones), and Legal Game <C. L. Hemmingsen), which started from the stalls, to run over half a mile in 55see.

Legal Game showed speed alter being slow out to finish on terms with the others. Race Book is owned by the president of the South Canterbury Jockey Club 'Mr H. G. Jamieson), and will make his debut on Saturday. Miss Halyard <C. S. Jones), a good track worker, sped over hall a mile in 53 4-ssec. the final three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. She will make a fiesh start in the hack sprint. Hunting Melody (C. S. Jones) and Orderly iK. W. Berry) were not extended to run their halfmile in 53 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. The pair shaded Red Mane <C. L. Hemmingsen) at the finish. Hunting Melody bears a well-trained appearance and will be one of the hardest to beat in the Beaconsfield Hack Handicap. Rhythm Rein Rhythm Rein (B. T. Jones) and Timely Boy (C. L. Hemmingsen) were also sent over half a mile, taking 13 4-ssec for the! opening furlong and completing their task in 54 2-ssec. Rhythm Rein is in good order to begin a new campaign on Saturday, and Timely Boy will resume racing on Ihe second day.

Aquarius <G. G. Hampton) and Stage Boy ij. W McDonald) were well clear of the steeplechaser, Show Place 18. T. Jones), after six furlongs in Imin 24sec. the last three taking 43sec. the fastest half-mile of the morning was by Lightning Boy ( C. L. Hemmingsen). which clocked 53 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Lightning Boy worked very keenly. Brookfields Lad. ridden by his Orari trainer. P. H. C Stock, started from the mile and a quarter, picking up the two-year-old, Aloment (C. S. Jones), near the half-mile. The pair came home in 54 4-ssec. the last three in 41 l-ssec.
