PROGRESS ON MISSILES
Soviet Advances Reported
(Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 23.
The “New York Times” reported today that new evidence of Soviet missile progress had reached the United States.
Soviet submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles —the first of their type in the worldhad been reported operating at sea in recent months, the newspaper said in a report by its military writer, Hanson Baldwin. At the same time, Soviet longrange missile launchings had increased, and about 20 had now been fired at ranges of 3500 miles or more.
Ba' win said that this progress was expected and it had not resulted in any alteration in the United States evaluation of Soviet missile capability. He said there had been no significant advances by the Soviet Union in piloted aircraft. The Soviet bombing fleet consisted of more than 1000 medium bombers and 150 heavy bombers which could be used as tankers, and the Russian training programme, particularly in air refuelling, had been speeded up.
But the total effort is not comparable to that of the United States Strategic Air Command, he added.
