25 DIE IN FIRE
Tourist Hotel Destroyed
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) OSLO, June 23. Reuters reported today that 25 to 30 persons were feared killed in a fire that gutted the Stalheim Hotel, a popular tourist resort in western Norway. Many of the 147 guests, including British and American tourists, were injured, some when they jumped from upper floor windows.
The American Associated Press, quoting eye-witnesses, said that the fire raged through the corridors with “explosive” speed, forcing many guests, including elderly people, to jump from windows.
At least one person was killed jumping from a window, police said.
About 35 persons, nearly all Americans, were taken to hospital at nearby Voss with injuries.
All motor lorries and cars in the area were mobilised to transport rescuers, and injured along the mountain road.
Most of the guests lost nearly all they had. They were taken to houses and farms in the neighbourhood. An official of the hospital at Voss said later that none of the injuries was serious, but several persons were suffering from shock, and would remain in hospital for some days.
British United Press said the fire broke out about 3 a.m. and the large wooden building was entirely destroyed in two hours
