TRAVEL AWARD PRESENTED
The Youth Hostel Association was presented with the travel enterprise award, a trophy given by Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon for the organisation considered by the New Zealand Travel and Holidays Association to have made the most substantial contribution to the development of the tourist industry, at a session of the travel convention in Christchurch. The Youth Hostel . Association 1 - d grown from a membership of a few hundred since the war to 4000, said the president of the convention (Mr J. Newman) It had opened during the year four new hostels, providing 100 additional beds. It now had 30 hostels, with 500 beds. The presentation was made by the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) who congratulated the association on its work in providing cheap accommodation for young people to see New Zealand.
