Obituary MR HARCUS PLIMMER

iNeib Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 21. Mr Harcus Plimmer, drama critic of the “Dominion" for more than 50 years, hnd one of the bestknown figures in both the theatre and journalism in this country, died today. He was 84. Not long after his retirement 13 months ago, Mr Plimmer’s health deteriorated. He spent some time as a patient in Bowen Street Hospital and Wellington Hospital before his death. He was a grandson of an early Wellington settler, Mr John Plimmer. Early in 1907 he was one of a group of journalists who left the “New Zealand Times” to join the "Dominion,” which was about to begin publication. Mr Plimmer was chief of staff of the new paper. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, and two sons.

MR S. E. O’HARA

The death has occurred of Mr Samuel Edward O'Hara, a well known Waimea West farmer. He was 70.

Formerly a hop grower Mr O’Hara, in more recent years

grew tobacco. He was a member of the Hop Marketing Committee and Hop Research Council, vicepresident of the Tobacco Growers' Federation and for six years was a growers’ representative on the Tobacco Board.

Mr Hefman John Schmidt, for 50 years one of the most accomplished photographers in Auckland. has died, aged 87. He was one of the few New Zealand photographers to have his work accepted and honoured in the leading salons of the world. As a photographer Mr Schmidt was known in the city from the turn of the century until his retirement in 1942 at the age of 70. He was appointed vice-regal photographer, and among his collection of historical photographs was a portrait series of all the Governors-General and Prime Ministers of New Zealand. As an art photographer he had prints hung in salons in Canada. England, Ireland. Wales, Australia, the United States. Belgium. Japan. Hungary, Austria. Algiers, and Indonesia. In one year alone 1937—his prints were accepted in 12 international salons. The same year he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

Mr Schmidt is survived by his wife and daughter.
