Women Bowlers
Sir, —The rules of most bowling clubs in Christchurch exclude from membership widows, single women, and those whose husbands are members of bowling clubs without a women’s section. I have heard of clubs keeping two or more vacancies for two years or so, for members’ or prospective members’ wives who may wish to join (a good many do not) It seems to be a very unjust, selfish, greedy-i'or-money attitude. Single women, widows, and grass widows need outside interests and exercise, apart from their business and household chores. Members’ wives have their husbands, homes, children, and grandchildren to occupy and interest them. As women lease the greens from the men for play, they should be in a position to appoint women of good character and financial standing if vacancies occur and their names are on the waiting list—Yours, etc., WHY NOT.
