Casper Leads After Third Round

June 13. Billy Casper slogged through mud to a three-stroke lead at the end of the third round of the United open golf championship yesterday.

In second place, with 18 holes to go. was Ben Hogan, with Sammy Snead, making a brilliant finishing run, third equal with Arnold Palmer and Bob Rosburg.

The final round was postponed until today when a series of thunderstorms drenched the course and forced play to be suspended three times.

Casper, putting brilliantly, came in with a one-under scratch 69 for. a 208 total just before the storm struck. On 211 was Hogan, who at 46. is seeking to become the first to win five open titles. Hogan had a third round of 71.

Snead, who never has won the open, came back info the picture with a three-under-scratch 67, which placed him in a tie for third place at 212, with Palmer, the 1959 masters’ champion, and Rosburg, who matched Snead’s 67, best score of the tournament.

Gary Player; of South Africa, bidding to become the first foreigner in 39 years to win the event, could not control his driver and wound up with a 76 for 216. which apparently put him out of consideration.

O’Connor Wins Prize At Wentworth

LONDON, June 13. The Irishman Christy O’Connor (Royal Dublin) today won first prize of £lOOO in the 72-holes Daks golf tournament at Wenjworth, Suirey. with an aggregate of 274.

O’Connor’s round scores were 69. 64, 67, 74.

Leading final positions were: Christy O’Connor (Ireland). 274, Peter Mills (Britain). 277; Bernard Hunt (Britain), and Dick Kemp (Britain), 283; Bobby Locke (South Africa), 284.

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 14. A sensational round was recorded at the Chisholm Park golf course on Saturday afternoon when A. K. Hynd returned a card of 64 off the stick in the Manning Cup qualifying rounds.

The round was easily a course record. The standard scratch score is 99, bogey 72. There were nine birdies on Hynd’s card, giving him* a net score of 61. His handicap is'three. Hyhd’s card read:—out: 5,3, 3,4, 4,4, 2.4, 4—33. In: 3,4, 4. 3, 4, 4. 3,2, 4—31.
