Golf Hogan A Leader In U.S. Open

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MAMARONECK (New York), June 11 Ben Hogan began brilliantly today in nis bid for a fifth United States open golf title by scoring a one-under-par first round of 69. He was tied for the early lead with the “unknown" California professional, Dick Knight, and the 1958 Professional Golfers’ Association tour winner. Don Finsterwald. Scores soared today on the tnugh 6873-yard Winged Foot Club course here as a gusty 20 miles-an-hour wind criss-crossed the fairways. Hogan, Knight and Finsterwald were the only par-breakers with about half of the field of 149 home on the first round of the 72-hoie event Hogan shot a near-perfect round until he three-putted the eighteenth green to slip into the tie.
