Only those active in the work of the Returned Services* Association realised how much work was needed, said the president of the Christchurch branch (Mr A. S. Farrar) at the annual meeting of the branch’s women’s section. He spoke of the work of the association and made special mention of the difficulties of veterans of World War I. Donations last year included:— R.S.A. Hospital Comforts. £175; R.S.A. benevolent fund, £120; Heritage, £10; Town Hall fund. £5 ss; and hospital chapels appeal. £6 10s. The stall in the Square had raised £3OO 3s 6d. and a jumble sale raised nearlv £22, it was reported. Mrs M. Everitt, reporting for the hospital committee, said that about 100 servicemen were visited every fortnight and given cigarettes and sweets. Special mention was made of the work of the late Miss M. P. Brown, who had visited servicemen in hospital for the last 42 years.
Social afternoons held on the second Wednesday of each month had been well attended, it was reported. Ten new members had joined the section during the last year, and many letters of sympathy and flowers had been sent to sick members from the sunshine jar. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Lady Andrews; president, Miss S. M Britton; vice-presidents. Mesdames H. M Cooper, M. Everitt. H. E. Packer; treasurer. Mrs G. E. Batchelor; committee, Mesdames R. A. Ambridge, D. Hilton. V. Annand. A. J. Smith, G. V. Beer. P. C Browne, B. J. Wallis, W. Cant. A. D. Woolford. H. Hahn, and Miss A. L. Smith.
Mrs J. Cocks compered a programme of songs by Miss Heather Smith and Mrs Ngaire Wilson, and a recitation was given by Miss Edna Neville. Mrs Cocks accompanied the singers.
