The Economy
Sir,—lt is amusing to see the socialist Government taking credit for having rescued the country from financial chaos. The socialist Government plunged the country into a mess; it was prepared almost to bankrupt the country to gain office. Since then overseas prices have improved a little. Even so, it ii very puzzling how things have suddenly got very much better. Oh yes. I forgot, it is since a few days before the Hamilton by-election, and they have got even better since! Millions of pounds worth of imports, we were told a few weeks before, would not be possible this year. Mr Nordmeyer may reduce taxes it the Works Loan is filled, thinking people know these are empty words. It is against Mr Nordmeyer’s very nature to reduce taxes, or even he might, votecatching being the only reason.— Yours, etc., SUNDOWN. June 11. 1959.
