MENTAL PATIENT CAPTURED
Constable Menaced With Gun
A patient, who escaped from the Sunnyside Mental Hospital on Saturday, was armed with a shotgun when he was recaptured by Constable George Dynes on Sunday. Constable Dynes did not know the gun was unloaded at the time when he dived at the patient who was menacing him With the gun. He knew that the patient had cartridges in his possession. The patient converted a light car containing a shotgun and ammunition, from outside the Templeton Hotel and drove to Orari and back. The man was seen on Sunday wheeling a bicycle and with a gun over his shoulder. Constables Dynes and G. Hillyer found the patient in the yard of a transport company. While attendants from the hospital approached the yard from the rear Constable Dynes went in the front and found the man in a cab of a truck. The patient got out and went behind the truck with the gun. The patient held the shotgun in a firing position and Constable Dynes had his .38 revolver.
The patient was ordered to drop his gun several times but did not do so. When the patient’s attention was distracted Constable Dynes dived on him and the man was disarmed.
