PLAYER SENT
Rugby Game At Park
The Sydenham hooker, J. F. McNamara, was sent off the field by the referee, Mr R. W. Phizacklea, during the second spell of the match between Sydenham and Merivale on Lancaster Park Oval on Saturday. Sydenham played with only 14 men for the remainder of the match, which it lost, 14-10.
The incident occurred after play had been in progress for about 11 minutes in the second spell. Merivale was pressing home a strong attack on the Sydenham line when the referee blew his whistle and penalised McNamara for a breach of Law 34 (foul play and misconduct) and sent him off the field. From the penalty kick Merivale scored a try. McNamara will now appear before the union’s management committee at its meeting on Tuesday evening. Earlier in the game, the referee penalised W. A. White (Sydenham) for a late tackle and spoke to him, and before the first spell ended, he also penalised R. E. Cotton (Sydenham) after he was tackled, and also spoke to him. Matches at Rugby Park were almost free of incident, although there was a very hostile demonstration from the crowd when, after the referee had blown his whistle to stop a ruck, a Linwood player was injured by a kick received from a University forward.
