RACING Tadpole Picked For Southland Steeples

"The Press" Special Service INVERCARGILL, May 15. Mr W. E. Hazlett’s jumpers Tadpole, Capet, and Brig O’Cally, which almost scooped the pool in the jumping events on the first day of the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting when Tadpole and Brig O’Cally were successful and Capet finished second in the Southern Hurdles, should give repeat performances on the second day tomorrow. Tadpole has the steadier of 11-5 in the Orepuki Steeples and Brig O’Cally should hold the Southland Steeplechase field comfortably. He is likely to be missing from the Orepuki Steeplechase. Capet is expected to drop out of the Southland Steeplechase.

The weather was fine today after a sharp frost, and the track will be heavier than on the first day. The T.A.B. double will be on the Waiau and the Tuatapere Handicaps, for which Smart and Geysel may be the respective favourites. Several fresh horses could upset the first day form. An interesting field of sprinters will line up in the Clifden Handicap. Subside indicated at Riverton that she was nearing winning form, and she may hold too many guns for the opening day winner. Fahoud, which, however, turned in a high class performance. Water Boy would need to improve greatly on his showing last week, but Black Star will have a following, and he could cause an upset if he raced up to something like his best. Ben Ledi, Kinsimm and Cattiva will also be taken into account. Selections:— 11 a.m. Orepukie Steeplechase.— Tadpole, Hunt The Slipper, The Fluke. 11.40 a.m. Novice Stakes.—First division: Ken, Mary Brown.
