OUTBREAK OF MUCOSAL
“No Intention Of More Controls” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 15. The Government has no intention at present of imposing further controls to prevent the spread of mucosal disease, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Skinner) said tonight. He had been asked to comment on a statement by Mr W. C. Miller, Dairy Section chairman of North Canterbury Federated Farmers, that a tightening of restrictions would probably be necessary to ensure the North Island disease did not recur in New Zealand. Mr Skinner said he thought the existing restrictions were adequate to halt the spread of the disease. The recent relaxation of the ban on stock movement applied only to the “control”, area and not to the “infected" area. There would be no relaxation of the ban on the movement of stock from the North Island to the South Island. Mr Skinner said he was getting frequent reports from the two New Zealand scientists who flew to the United States to study mucosal disease. These reports were “interesting and very valuable.”
