Cabinet Grants Approved *‘The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. May 15. The Cabinet has approved a grant of £106,000 for the establishment and first-year costs of the branch of the Victoria University of Wellington to be established at Palmerston North. This sum includes £BO.OOO for the construction of a new building work on which will begin within a month. The remaining amount will be spent largely in the salaries of lecturing staff. The grant for the first year’s operation of the Auckland University’s branch to be established at Hamilton is about £BOOO. These figures were given by the Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund). The grants are from the Government to the University Grants Committee, which will actually spend the money. Both the Hamilton and Palmerston North branches will be ready to receive their first students next March, at the commencement of the 1960 university year. The establishment of the Hamilton branch does not immediately require the provision of a new permanent building. For some time, perhaps several years, the branch will function in a block of the new Melville Teachers’ Training College. Staffing In the initial year Hamilton will cater only for English, stage one, and history, stage one students and will have a total staff of four lecturers, two in each subject. At Palmerston North the staff will be at least 10 and possibly 11. For the English classes there, one senior lecturer and two lecturers will be appointed and there will be two lecturers each in education. geography, and history and one lecturer in mathematics. In the first year all these classes will be at stage one only and in addition to their normal tutorial and lecturing duties, the staff will be responsible for dealing with extra-mural students from all over New Zealand, studying for stage one English, education. history and mathematics. Extra-mural study in geography, stage one, will not be controlled from Palmerston North.
