Pope Receives Soekarno

VATICAN CITY, May 14. President Soekarno of Indonesia was received in special audience this morning by Pope John after a ceremonial welcome to the Vatican City. The Pope asked the President to sit in an armchair—while he himself sat on a small throne under a canopy. The President, who wore the Grand Collar of the Order of Pius IX, drove to the Vatican with about 30 members of his suite in a seven-car convoy, and was greeted by Prince Carlo Pacelli. the Vatican’s CounsellorGeneral. and 15 high Church dignitaries. The Pope praised the role being played by Roman Catholics in the building of Indonesia. He referred especially to the work done by the Indonesian Roman Catholics to improve schools, hospitals and social welfare.
