U.K. DEATH PENALTY
“Too Early For Inquiry” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, May 14. The Home Secretary (Mr Butler) said today that it was too early for an inquiry into the operation of Britain’s two-year-old Homicide Act, which, has reduced the death penalty to five specified types of murder. He was replying to questions in the House of Commons a few hours after the second young murderer to die within a week was hanged at Winchester Prison, Hampshire. Mr Butler said he was keeping the working of the Homicide Act under constant review. The five specified types of murder which carry the death penalty are murder for gain, more than one murder, killing a policeman or prison officer on duty, murder by gun or bomb and murder while resisting arrest.
