AIRFIELD AT KAITAIA
Possible Use By Canberras
(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, May 14. The Air Force may use Kaitaia aerodrome as an operational base, in conjunction with Whenuapai, for the R.N.Z.A.F. Canberra squadron. After initial training at Ohakea the first of the 11 Canberras which will form the squadron are due to arrive in July and the whole squadron should be here at the end of the year. Whenuapai was to be the main operational base, the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) said today but he added he was rather perturbed about this because Whenuapai was mainly a civil airfield. The runway at Kaitaia was 5080 ft long and was built during the war to take Flying Fortresses, he said. Mr Connolly said Air Vice Marshall M. F. Calder, the Chief of Air Staff, would inspect Kaitaia airfield when he returned from overseas.
