NEW COOK STRAIT FERRY
“Railways Should Not Control Running” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14. The running of the new Cook Strait vehicular ferry should not be in the hands of the New Zealand Railways, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce said today in a supplied statement. The chamber made no specific decision on the fact that the railways are to be the owners and operators of the ferry but favoured the recommendation of the committee of inquiry that the control of the ferry be in the hands of an organisation experienced in shipping and with a pool of officers and crew to provide against hold-ups. Giving the views of the chamber’s trade and transport committee, Mr J. Lyons, said the only organisation qualified to run the ferry would be a shipping company, and it would work on the same world-wide basis established for agency vessels.
