KIRKLEA RUNS WELL
Fast Sprint At ; Trentham “The Press' Special Hervtce I w WELLINGTON. May 14. Kirklea, which will have her first test beyond a mile in the Foxton Cup, went well over six furlongs with Zenella at TTentham today. Credit was the most Impressive over a shorter distance, although Blonde Sprite and Petty Officer also galloped attractively. Work took place on the trial grass, which was heavy, especially between the three and the two furlongs. Kirklea (Dixon) and Zenella (Woodham) ran the two furlongs fast along the back and completed the last four in 53 2-ssec, the last three taking 40sec. Zenella had a slight advantage near the finish, but Kirklea was on terms at the post, with both going well. Although Kirklea has not raced over a middle distance, most of her family accomplished the switch from sprinting successfully. Credit (Woodham) and Kilroy (Wilkins) covered half a mile in 52 4-ssec, which equalled the best of the morning. Tlie last three furlongs, in 38 l-ssec, was easily the best. Petty Officer Petty Officer (Woodham) and Blonde Sprite (Dixon) were together at the end of five furlongs, the last four in 52 4-ssec and the three in 39 3-ssec. Blonde Sprite worked better than she did last week. Petty Officer failed at Otaki, his rider being blinded by a clod of earth. Glendower (Danby) showed dash when galloping with Globemaster (Rossley). The last half-mile took 54sec and the three furlongs 39 3-ssec. Westbrook (Wilkins) and No Offence (Rossley) w’orked from the mile to the three furlongs at threequarter pace and came from there in 41 3-ssec, with Westbrook doing the better. Edrenbell galloped half a mile, the last three furlongs in 39sec. He is good on the track and did not do badly at Otaki, where he made up a little ground for sixth. Dearwood (Wilkins), which finished strongly for fourth at Otaki. took 56 l-ssec for half a mile and speeded up over the last three furlongs in 41 2-ssec. Piccola was worked in the centre. She does not require much galloping. Last week Piccola was checked and became unbalanced at the half-mile and dropped out to sixth at the finish, but her Woodville form, when second to Silver Step, was good.
