INCREASED BUS FARES
Wellington Council Decision (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14. Public passenger transport fares in Wellington will be increased from 4d to 6d for a single setion. This decision has been reached by the Wellington City Council, whose traffic committee estimated in a report to the council that the new rates would produce £12,000 additional revenue in a full year. On all sections after the first, cash fares will be increased by Id, children’s fares included. One, two, and three-section concession cards will be dearer by 6d and the four and five-section cards by 3d. A report by the City Council Transport Department general manager (Mr W. S. Coppin) stated that, in spite of an increase of £7710 in income for the year ended March 31 last, the department showed a loss of £174,090 for the year. The loss for the preceding 12 months was £172,600. Income for the 1958-59 year amounted to *£895,039. Traffic expenses, however, had increased by £1973 and general
expenses were also up by £5777. Increases in power and fuel and capital charges amounted to £15,405 and £13,020 respectively, and salaries - £7960. Against every £ 1 of revenue, expenditure (including appropriations) amounted to £1 3s lid.
