STORE AT MURIWAI BURNT DOWN
Second Fire In 12 Months
(New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, May 7.
Fire- destroyed the Muriwai store and post office, 14 miles from Gisborne, between 4.30 and 5 a.m. today. The alarm was given by a passing duck shooter, but by the time the Manutuke Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived the building was well ablaze and when the Gisborne fire brigade arrived nine minutes later, the building had already collapsed.
This fire is the second at Muriwai within 12 months. The first destroyed the Muriwai Hotel on September 30, 1958. The building destroyed today was owned by Mr J. McDonald who had occupied the store for only two months.
