University Education

Sir, —I do not agree with Mr R. M. Algie, M.P., who contends “that university education was only for those who could profit from it.” In my opinion every human being would profit from a university education, not for any private profit, but to help his fellow beings and the community as a whole. We of the Western countries are in this new age and in the ridiculous position of having educationists and politicians desperately hunting among the slums and poorer communities for untrained intellect, which, if educated, would become first-class scientists and technicians (America is one example). I uphold having many universities in New Zealand and every country, rather than have the national income in the hands of a few while human beings remain starved for university training.—Yours, etc., SPUTNIK.
