FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A deep depression centred between the North Island and the Chatham Islands is moving slowly northeastwards and a strong south to south-easterly airstream flows over the country. Forecast:

Inland Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast: Moderate to fresh east to south-east winds prevailing; partly cloudy with one or two isolated showers; cool to moderate temperatures. Outlook: fair to cloudy.

Coastal Marlborough and Canterbury: Southerly winds, moderate to fresh inland and strong near the coasts, reaching gale force in exposed places; cloudy and cold with further showers. Outlook: improving.
