Nehru Fancied For Westport First Leg
Nehrn has struck * solid patch of form for his Riccarton owners, Mr and Mrs H. C. Kidd, and he should take beating in the Morley Handicap at Westport tomorrow. The Morley Handicap is the main race and first leg of the double on the first day of the Westport Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Nehru, has already won once in open company. He carried 7-8 including 51b overweight when he won the mile Westland Handicap at Hokitika on January 13, and he is not at all badly treated at Westport with 51b above the minimum. Two Riccarton horses in this field, Whiohau, and Her Ex, will not run. At a mile and a quarter Nehru’s strongest opponent might be Bon Soir. They met over that distance in the high-weight at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting. Nehru was a close second and Bon Soir was two lengths back third. Twelve pounds separated them in the weights, and they will meet on the same terms tomorrow. That points to Nehru coming out on top again. Beau Revere, a last-start winner at Hokitika, and Goldwyn, which was twice placed at the Westland meeting, are other form runners. Consistent Tintagel Tintagel, a consistent Lucky Bag gelding owned by Mrs J. S. Shaw and trained by her husband at Riccarton, is the
ruling favourite for the second leg, the Arthur Clouston Handicap. Last start, Tintagel was fourth behind Tauhtress, Rustic, and his bracketed mate Newmarket in the mile Lyttelton Handicap at Riccarton. Two starts back he was runner-up to Jesse Owens over seven furlongs at Oamaru.
