Sportsman’s Notebook OUTSTANDING SPRINTER AT WELLINGTON ATHLETICS

The outstanding competitor at the Wellington . junior and women’s athletic championships on Saturday was the Onslow sprinter. J. W. Taylor. He won the 100 yards in lOsec, which equals the New Zealand record, the 220 yards in the provincial record time of 22sec, and the 440 yards in 49.1 sec. Taylor, who is 17, is considered by many to be one of the best junior sprinters. New Zealand has produced and his performance in winning the . three sprint titles Hi one afternoon has confirmed that opinion. ' Miss N. Singer won all three sprint titles in the women’s section, making it 23 centre wins in a row. She broke records in two of her runs, blit her 75 yards in B.4sec, which equalled the New Zealand record, was not recognised because of wind assistance. Miss Singer won the 100 yards in 11.2 sec, .Isec over her own provincial record, and the 220 yards in 25.8 sec.

G. Lovell won the 880 yards in Imin 55sec, Lovell’s best time, and only .6sec outside the provin-

cial record. The promising young hurdler, M. Menzies, won the 120 yards hurdles in 15.2 sec and the 220 yards in 20.3 sec. Both these times wer§ well outside his own records.

Wellington has plenty of talent in its junior ranks and it will be Interesting to see how they fare against the best from other provinces at the national championships at Napier on February 27 ana 28.

Stephen Trophy A team of Maranui juniors will be in Christchurch this week-end to contest the annual event with South Brighton juniors for the James Stephen Trophy. Given in memory of a Maranui junior killed in North Africa during the war, this trophy has, produced bright swimming and teamwork. It is at present held by Martnui. The Maranui team this year can be expected to be aii unusually strong one. As well as the five chosen as members of the Wellington team, Maranui has three other juniors who made the recent trip to Australia, and whose drill work is consequently very strong. These are R. Cheriton, L. Eagle, and A. Robinson. • • Surf Boat 'Th* New Brighton .surf boat crew will compete at the national surf Championships at New Plymouth next month against the Piha and Muriwai clubs, of Auck-. land. The craw, under the direction of J. Ryan. a former international, has been rowing a good mileage each week. The rowers showed the benefit of this recently when they had ah easy win against the surf canoes at the Canterbury championships. Last Saturday, the boat was rowed up the Avon River to Kerr’s Reach where the crew raced a Christ’s Coßwje senior rowing cfiew, and won easily. The crew Will coritlnue to train extensively l Until the championships. . * * * Lord Cobham’s Team . TJie match Between the Gover-nor-General’s XI and a Wellington representative team at the I Basin Reserve on February 28

should provide some bright, and perhaps, unusual cricket. Lord Cobham's team appears to be quite formidable with two English internationals in himself and F. R. Brown, who captained the' 1950-51 England team to Australia and New Zealand. Lord Cobham was vice-captain of the 1935-36 English team which toured Australia and New Zealand (as the Hon. C. J. Lyttelton). Lord Cobham has also chosen E. LaneFox, a 19-year-old who played for Eton last year against Harrow.

Athletic Manager Mr R. Linton, an executive member of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, has been appointed manager of the Canterbury women’s and junior team' to take part in the national championships at Napier on February 27 and 28. Mrs Linton has bken appointed chaperon.
