RACING Avenge Sore After Fast Mile Trial

Avenge was sore after a fast mile trial on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. He was a little better after he had cooled out, but his trainer, K. J. Thomson, abandoned plans to take him to Westport. Avenge was ridden in his gallop by N. Cowles and was accompanied by Whiohau (C. T. Wilson). They ran their mile in Imin 45 2-ssec, which was very good time after a leisurely start. They took 15sec for the first furlong, but quickened to run the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec.

Whiohau is an acceptor for the Otago Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday.

The stablemates, Royal Avon (A. H. Eastwood) and Ration Time <C. T. Wilson), were going well on terms, finishing a mile in Imin 45 3-ssec. The pace was solid for the last half, which was run in 51sec.

Ration Time took the honours of this gallop. She carried more weight than Royal Avon, and ran the last bit strongly to draw level.

Ration Time will have her first test in an open class handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. She has 7-4 and may take beating from her place in the weights. Nasib (A. J. Stokes) and Juliette (C. T. Wilson) took Imin 48 3-ssec for their mile and 53 4-ssec for the last half. Nasib has an engagement in the Otago Handicap at Wingatui, scene of his only win so far this season. His chance will brighten if there is any easing in the track. Good Solo Effort Fern (G. W. Mein) kept up a strong gallop to record Imin 45 2-ssec for a mile and 52 l-ssec for the last half. It was a very good solo run by this Underwood mare. She is engaged in the Tradesmen’s Hack Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. Tintagel (J. Leach) and Newmarket (R. W. Gould) ran seven furlongs in Imin 31 2-ssec, a good run for hacks.

. Their speed fell away in the •straight, which was not surprising for they sped over the opening three furlongs in 37sec. Olympic Flame (D. J. Thistoll) and Snack (G. Baldwin) took Imin 34 l-ssec for seven furlongs and 53 l-ssec for the last four. Olympic Flame may race on the second day of the Dunedin meeting. Heath (R. J. Blair) led Nugget

(A. J. Stokes) by a neck ending seven furlongs in Imin 31 2-ssec, the last half-mile taking 53 2-ssec. Form Bunners Gambol <G. W. Mein) appeared to be shading Abou Ben Adhem <W. Hanlin) after running seven furlongs in Imin 32sec, the last four in 52 2-ssec. They are stablemates, and form horses for the Trial Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. Last start, Gambol beat all but Magic Circle at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting.' Rayspar <R. B. Taggart) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 17 l-ssec, and appeared to do his work well. He showed ability to run the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec.

Rayspar should be a match for the best of the southern hacks in the Central Hack Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. He beat all but the smart galloper Hopeful in the Post Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday week. Water Boy (R. B. Taggart) war shading his stablemates. Storm Haven <C. T. Wilson) and Scotch Emblem IR. J. Blair), finishing six furlongs in Imin 21 3-ssec. They ran at a brisk pace early, then slackened to take 54 4-ssec for the last half-mile. Water Boy will do his Easter racing at Riverton.

Shoal <C. McDonald) ran six furlongs in Imin 19 4-ssec, the last four in 52sec.

Aubade (W. Hanlin) was much too good for a Regal Motion gelding (E. B. Skelton) over five furlongs. Aubade won the trial at her leisure,by a length in Imin ssec. She ran the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec. Aubade will race at the Westport meeting, and it won’t be surprising if she wins her first race there. Sarcelle (W. Beck) sprinted half a mile smoothly in 50 2-ssec. F. A. Roberts is preparing her for another campaign at Trentham. Fast Sprint The stablemates Braganza <W. Hanlin) and Cadiz (A. J. Stokes) sped over three furlongs in 36 3-ssec, finishing on teims. They will race on the second day of the Dunedin meeting, with Trentham to follow. The unraced Cadiz shows ability. Solaris <B. S. Dodds) sprinted his hsflf-mile in 52 4-ssec. The rest of the work was done on the plough, which had been watered late and did not give fast footing at first. Training on the plough was marked by a smart sprint by Awatere, a light-weight in the Central Hack Handicap at Wingatui.

Ridden by R. W. Gould, Awatere led Topa (R. L. Browning) by a neck, finishing five furlongs in Imin 2 2-sseC. They ran the last four furlongs in SOsec and the final three in 48sec. Pictavia Girl (N. Cowles) and Royal Regent (R. B. Taggart) left Sleat (C. T. Wilson) well behind' in another fast five-fiir-loftg trial. The stablemates recorded Imin 2 4-ssec and 48 2-ssec for the last half-mile. Earlier, Search Warrant <B. W. McDonald) and Strada <W. A. Gibbs) spririted half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and then did pace work over another round.
