RIVER THROUGH KAIAPOI
Council Supports Renaming A suggestion by the North Canterbury Catchment Board that the river running through Kaiapoi should be renamed the Kaiapoi river was supported by the Kaiapoi Borough Council. The council decided to back a catchment board approach to the New Zealand Geographic Board for the renaming of the river below the confluence of the North branch and the Cam river to its junction with the Waimakariri river. However, the council decided that the whole of the North, branch should be renamed the Kaiapoi river if any part of the river was to be renamed. A letter to the council from the catchment board said that the confusion existed over the name of the river at Kaiapoi.
The Mayor (Mr C- T. Williams) said: “I think this is -a worthwhile suggestion, but it would be more suitable to rename the whole scheme.” “There has- been, confusion in the past about the river running through here,” said Or. H. L. Oram. “I do not think you would get over the problem by adding another name. You will have three names, instead of two. in the vicinity. “I think it would be better if the whole branch was renamed from the source.” he said. The Mayor said that Christchurch people “who do not know any better” called the river the Cam. but the Cam was the river that came from Rangiora and around the back of the woollen mills, then joining the North branch. . - He moved council support for the catchment board's suggestion, and adding that the whole stream should be renamed. ,
