YOUTH CLUB AT LYTTELTON

Interim Committee To Investigate Proposal A public meeting at Lyttelton on Saturday night decided to support a project for the formation of youths’ club in Lyttelton and an interim committee was appointed to investigate premises, and select leaders.

The club should be made attractive and should be run by the boys themselves, under adult guidance, said Mr C. L. Reid, one of the conveners. It should be undenominational and nonpolitical and should be comprehensive, embracing all athletic sports, also cultural subjects such as drama. The club should be open every night and a canteen was essential. Parent interest was necessary and good leadership was most important. The Rev. J. J. Merton said that the Y.M.C.A. in Christchurch had facilities for training persons in leadership. He agreed the club should be non-sectarian, even non-religious, but must be concerned with teaching ideals and building character.

The following appointed an interim committee: Mrs A. Stevenson, the Rev. Father D. Healey, the Rev. D. K. Boyd, Messrs C. L. Reid. C. Wallis and W. E. Bale.
