TROTTING CON SCOTT WINS AT ADDINGTON

Second Leg To Highland Heath Cob Scott made a long overdue return to winning form when he upset calculations in the President’s Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double at the Canterbury Park Trotting Chib’s autumn meeting at Addington on Saturday. Con Scott began well, moved up to the lead with six furlongs left, and worked clear at the five furlongs. He did not look like being caught from this point, and won well by a short length from the fash-finishing Diamond Hanover, which shaded Lady Shona.

Con Seott’s win was not really Surprising- as he had finished in ihe money in two starts oo the course early in January. At his only other start since, he finished seventh at Forbury Park, after losing ground early. Raced by his Ashburton trainer. A. C. Amyes, he is a gelding by U. Scott from a grand race mare, Joan Conquest He has always shown plenty of ability, but nervousness at the start of his races has slowed his promotion through the dames.

The second leg, the Wigram Handicap, resulted in an impressive win for the Morano four-year-old, Highland Heath, which beat Sextant and John Leslie by three lengths. There was considerable merit in Highland Heath’s effort as he had to cover a lot of extra ground to hold his position. The Park Juvenile Stakes resulted in a decisive win for the Oamaru eott. Sun Chief, winner of the New Zealand Golden SHgper Stakes at Waimate in DeMmber at his only other start. Sun Chief led an the way and won with a lot in hand by five lengths from Arania and Sally BoyThe hot favourite. Blue Prince, broke badly at the start and did well to finisb sixth- He took 2min 8 1-Seec for bis last mile, the last half being run in Imin 3 l-s*ee.

He raced to the front ahead of Coincident, the tiring Banjo, Lady Shona, Mighty Loyal, Diamond Hanover, Papatawa and Solemnity; Con Scott ran out the final furlong too solidly for Ms rivals and had three-quarters of a length to spare at the post. Diamond Hanover received a great run on the rails clour to the leaden. He had trouble working dear on straightening up, but once in the open be finished strongly, and beat Lady Shona by a head for second. Lady Shona began brilliantly and die was never very far away. She looked likely to trouble the winner at the furlong, but came to the end of her run 30 yards out. -Waynrm. after breaking and losing a lot of ground at the start, did well to finish fourth, three lengths back. Papatawa was right up fifth, a length in front of Solemnity. with half a length to Reason Why. Coincident was another length back until «»es to Banjo and Ice Drift, with Kingsdown Direct and Gay Cobmright up, clear of Mighty Loyal. Mayneen, Solemnity and Queen’s Glow lost ground at the start.

Easy Win Highland Heath stayed on much too solidly for the others at the end of the two miles in the Wigram Handicap and he ran put an easy winner. The leading 14 raced in close order most of the

way, with Highland Heath bring forced wide to hold his position. Bonny Starlet need clear with about seven furlongs left. She was joined by Highland Heath just after the three furlongs and they turned for home two lengths in front of Arnhem and Omega, with Waltaki Child, Sextant, Zany and Good Fight next Highland Heath soon ahobk off Bonny Starlet and finished on strongly to win by three lengths. Sextant received a good run early, but lost his position in the middle stages. Sextant came home well for second, half a length in front of John Leslie, which showed speed after being slow early. Zany, which also lost her position, battled on for fourth, clear of Maxwelton, which showed tremendous speed. Battle Fling and Waitakl Child were ri£ht up, ahead of Lady Vai and Gay Alabama. Maxwelton, Mooloo. Achates, Daisy Doro, Battle Fling, Red Fyre and Great Dillon lost ground at the start Red Monarch Wins Red Monarch gained his first win since being trained in the South Island when he beat Vanity Scott in the Otley Handicap. M. Holmes had Red Monarch handily placed in about eighth position for most of the race. Gay Baron made most of the pace, but he was passed by Light Mood, which had lost a big stretch of ground early, near the two furlongs. Light Mood led Gay Baron racing to tha straight, with Solemnity, Surie Queen, Doral’s Joie, Harlequin Parade, Raven Dew, Vanity Scott and Red Monarch following in that order.
