N.Z. Runner Wins Third Place (N.Z Press (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 15. Peter Penlington, of New Zealand, finished third in the New South Wales mile championship, won by the world two mile and three mile record holder, Albert Thomas, in 4min 11.2 sec, in Sydney yesterday. Thomas outclassed the field, but was not out to make fast time. World Pole Vault Record • N.Z Press Assnciution--Copurtoht • _ PHILADELPHIA, February 14. A New Jersey pole vaulter, Don Bragg, set a world indoor record for the event at Philadelphia last night, clearing 9%in. Bragg’s vault was the second highest ever.. Bob Gutowski, of the United States, cleared 15ft 9Jin in 1957, but the International Amateur Athletic Federation refused to recognise the height because his pole fell under instead of away from the bar. Gutowski holds the world outdoor mark of 15ft B%in. Teams For Women’s, Junior Titles Miss Valerie Sloper has been appointed captain of the Canterbury women’s and junior athletic team to compete ‘at the national championships at Napier on February 27 and 28.
