DAMAGE TO FREIGHTER
Extensive Holes Found
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 27.
Damage to the hull of the Norwegian freighter, Golden Master, is extensive from No. 2 hold forward. This has been established by the Auckland skindiver, Mr L. Subritzky, who today completed a detailed inspection of one-third of the hull from the stem aft.
The worst gashes are on the port side. A decision on temporary repairs will not be made until the entire hull has been examined by Mr Subritzky. This is expected to take him the whole of tomorrow. A start was made yesterday to unload phosphate from the flooded No. 2 hold. A bulldozer submerged with the phosphate was recovered first. A Maori cargo worker experienced in underwater fishing, Mr W. Bridger, entered the hold with breathing equipment and secured a line to the machine.
Discharge of phosphate from other holds continued today, and it is expected that unloading will be completed on Monday. The ship may be ready to sail for Auckland in about a week.
Men of Mason Brothers, Ltd., Auckland, started repairs to the stern of the ship, damaged when an anchor cable tore away while the vessel was beached.
