Fair Chance’s Speedy Three Furlongs

(From Our Oral Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 22,

Fair Chance brought himself right into favour for the Trentham Stakes on the third day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting on Saturday with a sound mile on the coures proper at Trentham this morning.

■ it was only over the last three furlongs that he was asked for speed, and he -ran that section brilliantly. Bella Paola, from Takanini, dida.smart half-mile and so did the Wingatui mare, Minglow. . < Most,of the work took place on the mididle-of the course proper, which was very hard. Fair Chance (A. G. Walsh) started easily from the mile, but quickened near the half-mile and was timed overthe last three furlongs in 35 3-ssec. .The last halfmile occupied Msec. Fair Chance travelled very freely, as he does always in training, and towards the end he was going very Fair Chance has thrived since he was suceessful in the Racing Club Handicap.-a mile and a half, on the middle day. This time he will be trying a mile and three furlongs, and his meeting with the three-year-olds. Up and Coming and Lawful, is being looked forward to with great interest. Final (K.' D, Campbell) . and Ark Royal (A. I. PoweH) kept together while running a mile. For a start they went very easily, and they quickened for . the last five furlongs in Imin 5 3-ssec and four in 50 3-ssec. Ark Royal went well within himself, and Final also performed pleasingly.

during the last few weeks and seems likely to be a warm favourite in the Hopeful Stakes. If'she is successful it will be her fifth win on end. Minglow (R. J. Bain) ran five furlongs, the last four in 48 3-ssec. Minglow has done better during the last few days than she did in her preparatory work for the Telegraph Handicap last Saturday when she finished unplaced Fairassan (D. J. Wyatt) led his stablemate Fair Merit (L. G. Coles) by a length at the finish of half a mile down the chute in 49 4-ssec. They began from a standing start so it was a very smart trial. Fair Merit looks well. He has a chance in the City Handicap and. should there be rain, his prospects are likely to be the brighter. Oreka (Anderson) ran half a mile in 53 2-5 sec ’ \ Top Liner (Campbell), which went disappointingly when unplaced in the Nursery Handicap, on the middle day. was urged along to finish a length.ahead of Sol d’Or (Mackie) over three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. Top Liner has size and strength, but it looks as though the best of him will not be seen tor a while yet. After exercising in the middle. Post (A. J. Stokes) ran five furlongs the last tour in 49 2-ssec. Goudvink (N. W. Belsham) was not asked for his best while running half a mile in 52sec. - ■■ > ■ - Cabonne (C. H. Mackie) started easily from the half-mile and put on med for the last ttutee furlongs in 3T2-ssec. Motueka (W. D? Wfrlie) strode over a mile m Itnin 48 l-ssec, the last hdli in SO 3-ssec. On the trial grass. Purser (J. TAnderson)- ran half a mile smoothly, the last three furlongs in 39sec. Royal Jester (Coles) did light pacework. Gallop .on Plough On the plough. Recluse (G. Wilkins) finished her work .with half a mile in 53 l-ssec. Resemblance (W L. Aitken), a likely favourite for the Summer Handicap, ran a mile in imin 45sec, the last half in 51 2-srec. He was assisted by Culminate (A J Stokes). Resemblance has freshened, and he is ready for a good effort in the Summer Handicap. The horses which did pacework on the plough included Lawful. Yeman and Shamrock Queen. Prince Argon did light exercise in the middle. According to their trainer. C. M. J filings, Lawful will not contest the Trentham Stakes, and, unless there is a fair amount of rain to ease the going, Yeman will be allowed to miss the Summer Handicap. Comte De Paris (Wigging) worked easily on the plough and then trotted in the middle. He looks the better for his recent racing.

The chance of Ark Royal being successful in the Trentham Stakes is highly regarded. A slow pace early would be against him. He weathered last week’s racing in capital order. Final looks solid, and as she is able to stay well she might take beating iff the Summer Handicap, a mile and a half. She looked unlucky not to pay a dividend last Monday in the Racing Clttb Handicap. Summer Glow (J. Watton) and Love and Kisses (K. D. -Campbell) were together while covering six furlongs in Imin 17 4-ssec, the last four in Slsec. Love and Kisses is thriving by the look of her She performed well for second in the Anniversary Handicap, a mile, last Saturday, and the indications are that she will be prominent again oh Saturday in the Thorndon Handicap. Strong Six Furlongs Fonutainhead 'K. D. Campbell) and his stablemate Up and Coming (J Wat ton) ran .six furlongs strongly in Imin 18 4-ssec. Fountainhead was under hard restraint from the start and Up and Coming also worked well within himself. Fountainhead will be G. F. Hughes's mount in the Trentham Stakes and, according to their trainer. G W. B. Greene, no rider will be engaged for Up and Coming until Saturday morning. Up and Coming had a hard race for second in the Gloaming Stakes on Monday, but he does not seem much the worse tor it Beau Way (K . Campbell) finished strongly, a length and a ball better than Torrid Time (G. F. Hughes) over six furlongs in Imin 18 2-Ssec. the last four In SOsec. His form lately has taken a turn/ for the better, and very likely it will keep improving. He is a runner in the Kelburn Hack Handicap, having been successful in the Pencarrow Hack Handicap last Saturday. Ole (D. J. Wyatt) and Melanlon (G. F. Hughes) ran easily to the finish of six furlongs in Imin 20sec. Moon Crest (J. T. Anderson) was going strongly at the finish of half a mile in 50 4-ssec. She was assisted by Clock (Hughes) over the last three furlongs and a half and the last three were done in 35 2-ssec. It was splendid work. Moon Crest has been out of form, but she might be a prospect in the Thorndon Handicap. Bella Paola (Wyatt). sprinted naif a mile in 49sec. She has thrived on the racing and travelling she has had
