Labour’s Record

Sir, —In his attempt to bolster up the Labour Government, “A.F.P.” ignores the facts. The internal mess was brought about by the giving away of £2l million, and then the Government’s endeavour to borrow its way out of the mess of its own creation. I notice that "A.FJ>.” makes no mention of the reduction in pay packets as from October 1 last. Neither does he mention the delay in the increasing of the universal superannuation. Hard luck, indeed, for these old people, for they would already be enjoying this extra money, had the Labour Party promises not been accepted at their face value.—Yours, etc., NEARLY 76. January 21, 1959. Sir,—‘ ‘A.F.P.” contends the National Government plunged the country into a mess? Over-im-porting went on solely on account of Labour’s own policy. People knew there would be restrictions, shortages, and all the attendant abuses. Most over-importing happened during the first few months of Labour. Mr Nash did nothing to stop it until the “notorious Budget.” But it was too late then, Labour had bought its way in for millions from rebates to free school books. If Mr Nash thought the country could afford all this, it just shows how out of touch he was with affairs in New Zealand and overseas. (He also took £14,000,000 from the Social Security Fund.) If "A.FJ’.’’ refers to Mr Nash’s remarks about no tax increases, on election eve, he will see how he broke his promise by increasing P.A.Y.E. tables last October. —Yours, etc., SUNDOWN. January 21, 1960.
