Smith Street

Sir,—Smith street’s annual donation of tar and screenings has been patted into place by a shovel. The holes reappear within a week. Why not save up for 20 years and apply a surface coat? A resident weaves like a drunken driver dodging the humps and bumps. An ambulance attendant described it as worse than a, back country road; a taxidriver says it is absolutely shocking for a city street. Even the dustman found Smith street hard when he got bupipedSoff the dust cart. This is a blind street but our city councillors need not think we are also blind. Let them take a ride up to the end and they will realise, that this is no exaggeration. Perhaps they might even find the opening out on to Linwood avenue for us.—Yours, RATEPAYER. December 20, 1958.

[The City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) said that this street was not perfect, but was in a reasonably tidy state. It was last resealed in 1949 and would be resealed again next sealing season. The patching of holes had been more successful than the correspondent implied.]
