NAPIER WOOL SALE

Fine Crossbreds Very Finn (New Zealand Prase Association) NAPIER, J«m»«ry 21. The first day’s selling at Napier’s second main wool sale ended this afternoon with priebs quoted as very firm for fine cross, breds on' rates- last week, and fully firm for all other types, except that/ coarse fleeces were inclined to be easier. A review of the day’s selling is contained in an official report issued this evening by the Hawke’s (Bay Woolbrokers' Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Wool Buyers’ Association, and the New Zealand Wool Commission.

The report said that catalogues comprising 24,667 bales of greasy wool and 1714 bales of scoured wool were submitted to a fully representative bench of buyers. The wool, which was drawn from all Hawke’s Bay and East Coast

areas, in many instances showed the effects of the adverse season. Fleece wools from the coastal areas, which experienced drought conditions during autumn and winter, were thinly grown and rather dusty. Bellies and pieces were not particularly good, there being a fair amount of yellow colour present. The bulk of the lambs’ wool was. rather short, but a premium was paid for lines which showed good length and colour and were well picked. Although competition was very brisk, main support came from the. Continent, with Bradford operating sparingly and with some support from Japan for speciality wools. America gave good support for coarse paperfelts and carpet fleeces, but was less active than in recent sales. “The market can be quoted as very firm for fine crossbreds and fully firm for all other types, as compared with the previous Auckland sale, except that coarse fleeces were inclined to be easier. The remaining catalogues, comprising 22,962 bales of greasy wool, will be offered next on Friday.’’ Bante of Prices The official range of price, le:— . Southdown, 58/60’s

LONDON WOOL SALES After a somewhat irregular start, the January series of London wool sales closed on an improved note, with wider competition, says cabled advice from the Bank of New Zealand’s London office. In the New Zealand offering greasy crossbreds predominated, and these on the opening day moved in buyers’ favour, although good styles sold relatively well. The tone was cautious, and the demand came mostly from the Home Trade. Scoured descriptions were also in buyers’ favour. A small offering of slipes came forward. Fine lambs of full length declined 5 per cent, with other descriptions very firm, and sometimes against the buyer. Pfices showed little change at the Friday auction.
