QUOTATIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH

ORDERS FOR U.K. SHIPYARDS Lowest For Ten Years (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, January 20. /Orders for merchant ships taken by British shipyards in 1958 were the lowest since 1949, the Shipbuilding Conference reported today. The conference said that new contracts last year ‘ totalled 144 ships of 497.000 gross tons’, but this gain was balanced by the cancellation of firm orders for 37 ships of 454,000 gross tons. In 1957, 1,679,000 gross tons were ordered. The conference, the commercial organisation of the British shipbuilding industry, said orders for ships were unlikely to increase as long as international freight traffic remained low. There was also keen competition from foreign industry, in price, delivery and credit facilities, for such orders as were being placed.

British Cars.—Britain exported 488,816 cars in 1958—some 60,000 more than in 1957—the Board of Trade has announced. Total car production reached 1,051,551. This was the first time that more than 1.000,00 cars had been produced.— (Reuter.)
