STINGRAYS CAUGHT

Divers’ Work Near Picton Two stingrays, one weighing 721 b and the other 341 b, were caught by two members of the Canterbury Underwater Club at the recent Dominion underwater spear fishing convention at Curious Cove, near Picton. The members, Messrs J. Voot and W, Doak, speared the rays while snorkeling in shallow water, about 25 feet. It took Voot nearly 15 minutes to land fish. Spread out, the. wings of the ray measured about four feet. When the spear struck the ray it struggled hard to escape, and pulled Voot through the water about 10 miles an hour. His biggest difficulty was to prevent the ray getting near enough to use its sting in the tail. Several times it swung round unexpectedly and came very close to using its sting. Mr Doak’s ray was about half the size of Mr Voofs, He was able to land it without difficulty.
