SWIMMER IN DIFFICULTIES
Prompt Action By Young Women
Prompt actiqp on the part of two young women prevented a possible drowning tragedy at Nesse’s Creek. Kaniere, shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Two young visitors from Christchurch were bathing in the stream, which was swollen with flood waters, when Miss Margaret Jamieson, aged 15, of Christchurch. got into difficulties. Miss Cathie Howat first- went to her assistance, and later, aided by Miss Shirley Fleming, managed to get the girl on to the bridge piles from where she was lifted on to the bridge with a rope by Constable H White, of Kaniere, and Mr T. Clarke, the Westland County engineer. Miss Jamieson, although exhausted, suffered no after effects. Her. companion managed to get across to the far bank of the river unaided.
