DISCOVERIES OF LIVE SHELLS
Former American Training Area
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, January 14.
Between 20 and 30 shells, mainly the American 81 m.m. type, had been found at Rerewhakaaitu in the last year, said the Army representative in Rotorua (Warrant Officer N. Cavanagh). Rerewhakaaitu was the wartime site of an American training ground and large quantities of ammunition, legacies of battle manoeuvres, have been found since the war.
Warrant Officer Cavanagh said that most of the reports were received in the spring when the farmers were ploughing ready for crop sowing. Army experts inspected the finds and blew them up. Anyone finding such material should leave it alone and advise him immediately so that it could be exploded, said Warrant Officer Cavanagh.
