RACING SUMMER GLOW FOR CUP AT TRENTHAM

Summer Glow is selected to win the Wellington Cup at Trentham on Saturday.

She has no winning or placed form at the distance, and is in a field containing some very good stayers; but her sixth under difficulties in the New, Zealand Cup two months ago was the performance of a mare capable of running out two miles solidly.

miles. Since then she has had three races. In winning stylishly over 10i furlongs at Woodville last week she made it (dear that she is at her best for her Trentham campaign. . Mares have not had a good record in the Wellington Cup since the distance was increased to two miles in 1942. Since then the only successful mare was Almora, and she had to share the honours with Prawns. If Summer Glow fails to make the grade on Saturday, Froth could improve the record of the females in the race. . Froth showed a highly-develop-ed combination of brilliance and stamina to win the Auckland Cup on January 1. The Auckland-Wellington Cups double has eluded many good stayers, but there is strong confidence in the. north that it will not be too difficult for Froth. Other proved stayers in the field include Yeman, which has already won Auckland and Wellington Cups, the Awapunl-train-ed Ballast, and the Waikato stayer, Llanisfair. Ballast had well-earned success in the last New Zealand Cup. A year ago he was runner-up to Yeman in the Wellington Cup, a race won by his brother Crimson King in 1953. Support for Foxmara Llanisfair won the Wellington Racing Club’s Autumn Handicap last season. But he will not be as solidly supported as his stablemate, Foxmara. Foxmara shaped like a stayer in finishing third to Froth and Royal Jester in the Auckland Cup. He is expected to show to greater advantage on the roomier Trentham course. Foxmara shaped like a stayer in finishing third to Froth and Royal Jester in the Auckland Cup. He is expected to show to greater advantage on the roomier Trentham course. Foxmara is trained at Te Rapa by R. T. Cotter. Through his sire, Foxbridge, he inherits a stout strain of the celebrated Son-in-Law staying blood. And there is another strain of Son-in-Law blood in Foxmara’s pedigree through his maternal grand-sire, Robin Goodfellow is also the sire of Home Brew, the dam of Froth. The Wellington Cup is the first leg of the double on Saturday. The second leg is the Telegraph Handicap, which has attracted sprinters from Auckland to Wingatui. Riccarton will be represented by the Dunedin-owned Braganza, which won his first three races this season. One of his victories was the Dunedin Guineas. Lion, a last-start winner at Ellerslie, seems likely to be the favourite, but Braganza should be able to put him to the test. Doubles Fields Fields for the double are analysed below.
