MARKERS OFF U.S. COAST
“Unmistakably Russian”
(Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 13. The United States and Canadian navies have found more than 20 large radioactive steel devices ‘‘of unmistakable Russian make” embedded in the ocean floors off both their Atlantic and Pacific coasts, the columnist Robert Allen reported today. Writing in his column “Inside Washington” in the New York “Post,” Allen describes the discoveries as “sensational.” He says the devices were found to depths of up to 1000 ft. Allen says that in some instances the devices were well within both the United States and Canadian three-mile teritorial limits. Navy authorities are certain he says that they are “position markers” to be used by Soviet submarines for launching nucleararmed missile attacks against United States and Canadian coastal cities.
Allen adds: “While only a relatively small number of these Russian mechanisms have so far been uncovered, both United States and Canadian officials are convinced “hundreds” more have been planted off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. “It is thought that this was done by the Soviet cargo ships and submarines which have been repeatedly observed off the American coasts in the last several years.”
