FOOT ABSCESS IN SHEEP

Experiments At Lincoln

Because of the very favourable weather conditions during winter and spring, the predisposing conditions for foot abscess among sheep did not occur at Ashley Dene and insufficient cases occurred to give reliable results, the board of governors of Canterbury Agricultural College was informed yesterday. The Director (Dr. M. M. Burns) reported that the veterinary department had completed an extensive trial to evaluate the effectiveness of two types of experimental vaccines on foot abscess at Ashley Dene, using groups of 580 Corriedales, 720 fat lamb flock ewes and 500 Corriedales put to Border rams. Dr. J. W. McLean said the experiment required the treatment of a large number of sheep, because in average seasons the expectation of foot abscess was usually fairly low. It might be worthwhile to have the trial repeated this year. He understood that the Vaccine Laboratory was keen to carry the experiment further.
