Street Name Boards
Sir, —It must be a good three years since attention was drawn in these columns to the deplorable condition of the street name boards; and the matter has been reverted to at intervals since then. To the best of one’s recollection, a good many months ago, the last official word on the subject was that a supply of name-boards had been ordered. Of course, if these are among the desirable commodities this improvident country has had to import from Timbuctoo or Terra del Fuego, we will just have to. grin, or not, and bear it. Otherwise, it seems about time somebody or other awoke from their torpor to see for themselves, not only how many streets are nameless, but in how many cases, e.g. along Bealey avenue, intersecting streets are unidentifiable. And, en passant, the more potholes they encounter, the better. —Yours, etc., M.T. January 12, 1957.
